The 5 Best Sunrise Hikes on Oahu

Makapu’u Tom Tom Trail

The Tom Tom Trail is one of the most underrated hikes on Oahu, and is by far one of our favorites. After a fairly short, but steep incline to the ridge this hike boasts some of the best views of Oahu’s Eastside.

The full hike is a roughly 6.6 mile trek that will take you to Waimanalo. However, if you are looking for extraordinary views, a beautiful sunrise or the notorious Makapu’u Puka then you don’t need to hike nearly that far. The beginning of the hike is fairly steep, but once you reach the ridge it flattens out. The area is very dry, with lots of tall grass and cacti (shoes or sneakers are a good idea for this one).

Some other views on this hike include: Rabbit Island, Makapuu Lighthouse, Makapuu Puka, Sealife Park, Makapuu Beach, Koko Head, and more!

Lanikai Pillbox

If you are looking for an easier hike to watch the sunrise, this is probably the one for you. Lanikai Pillbox is family (And dog) friendly, and is one of the most popular spots to watch the sunrise.

The hike starts of fairly steep, and can be very dry at times. However, getting to the top will reward you with some of the best views of Lanikai Beach and the Mokes. Not to mention the 3 pillboxes you can see/explore on this hike!

Makapu'u Lighthouse

Another easy, and family friendly hike that allows hikers of all skill levels (and ages) to enjoy the sunrise, and even a lighthouse!

The Makapuu Lighthouse Trail is paved the whole way up, and ends at a scenic lookout with amazing views of the east side of Oahu, Rabbit Island, Makapuu Beach and the Makapuu Lighthouse. On a very clear morning, you can even see Maui and Molokai islands.

Oh, and by the way, this is a great whale watching spot during the right season (Normally mid December through April).

Koko Head

If you are looking for an early morning challenge before you watch the sunrise, Koko head is where you will find it. You will have to climb around 1,000 stairs before reaching the top of Koko Head, where you will find beautiful views of the island, as well as the perfect spot to watch the sunrise.

While the hike itself may be a challenge for some, it is easy to find the trailhead and easy to find parking!

We realize that not everyone is a morning person, and not everyone is an avid hiker. If you want a rewarding spot to relax and watch the sunrise, without all the work, Sandy Beach Park is the perfect spot for just that. Sandy Beach lies at the base of Koko Crater, or Kohelepelepe, and is known for its powerful shorebreak! Whether you want to sit in the sand, or drive up and enjoy the view from the parking lot, Sandy Beach is a great spot for anybody chasing the sunrise!:
